NAIROBI CITY WATER SUPPLY
MAVWASO obtains bulk water supply from Nairobi City Water & Sewerage company ltd. The volumes received have however declined over time due to the supply deficit experienced within the Nairobi city. With the completion and operationalization of the Northern collector tunnel and the Karimenu II Dam prospected by end of 2024 the volumes received are expected to significantly increase.
The water received serves the areas of Syokimau, Katani, Mlolongo, Sabaki and Athiriver areas with ongoing expansions to serve the areas of Utawala, Kinanie and Kitengela.
ABSTRACTION FROM KMC & PORTLAND DAM
MAVWASCO abstracts water from the KMC and Portland (Kasuitu) dams located within Athirver which is then treated at its water treatment plant and distributed to the areas of Athiriver town, Greatwall gardens, Gimu, Green Park, Lukenya , Daystar and their environs.
BOREHOLES
MAVWASCO abstracts about 7,000m3 of water monthly from boreholes.
WATER KIOSKS
For informal settlements/low income areas MAVWASCO supplies water through water kiosks. To reduce operational costs, increase efficiency and improve on supply hours we are installing ATM dispensing units within the kiosks to enable our customers access water at their convenience.
STRATEGIES FOR INCREASING WATER PRODUCTION & NETWORK EXPANSION
To increase water production and network expansion, the following initiatives by MAVWASCO, County Government of Machakos, TANATHI and the National Government are at various implementation stages:-
- Increasing Bulk supply from Nairobi city water & sewerage company
- Desilting of KMC and Portland Dams
- Construction of Stoni Athi Dam
- Bulk supply from Olooloitikosh Dam
- Development of Ndarugu dam
- Drilling and rehabilitation of Boreholes.
- Develop pipeline network extension for Syokimau, Mlolongo, Kinanie, Utawala, Githunguri, Joska, Kamulu and Kyumbi areas
